The Other Space
by
Japleen Kaur
Sister cafe of the famous Illiterati cafe, this one's more than just the food. A co-working space with delicious coffee for days when you've to send that urgent email or join an important zoom call meeting. And if you aren't there for either then you can look at the stunning art on display. Do try their sinful cakes, and try to not get distracted by the view of the mighty Dhauladhars. In the silent room you can pay INR 300 for wifi, a quiet space to work and a beverage of your choice. Killer deal, no?
The Bird House Cakery
by
Japleen Kaur
Situated in upper Dharamkot is this tiny bakery with all the right kind of vibes. Welcoming you will be the cutest dogs who'll ensure you spend your entire day with them. While you stand adoring the humble yet aesthetic decor that Anukriti the owner/Baker/sunshine girl has done up herself, don't forget to place your order. From cheesecakes to red velvet shakes, from chocochip cookies to cinnamon rolls, and the perfect slice of pizza, this bakery is like your first crush -- you won't ever forget it! A cup of coffee, a bite of that gooey cake, and the view of the valley below is just what the soul sometimes needs. Not to sound cliched but it's true.
AVVA's Cafe - Flavours of Southern India
by
Japleen Kaur
As soon as you reach Bir, you'll see direction boards with the name 'Avva's cafe' written on them. Trust me, and follow them to reach the location of the best dosas, podi idli, lemon rice, Mysore uttapam, sheera and filter coffee in the whole of Himachal. Before you point out the irony of kick-ass South Indian food up north let me tell you that the owners are from the South and they've made Bir their home. Avva means mother and that's exactly what aunty who also cooks all the food herself is, to the many people residing there. Feel the true warmth of home away from home with every bite you take here. Actually from every sip that you take starting from the delectable welcome drink of Channa-Rasam.
Cafe Ri
by
Japleen Kaur
Finding this cafe is like embarking on a treasure hunt to enrich yourself with the best meal of your life. Okay, that might be an exaggeration but Cafe Ri is hidden near the main square of Mcleodganj and takes a while to spot. But once you do, delicious Bibimbap, Kimbap (like sushi but Korean seaweed rolls), Chicken Katsu, Veg Japche, and more await you. The eye-pleasing decor in this hole in the wall cafe is a huge plus. On the downside you don't get a view but that gives you a chance to concentrate on the person in front of you. Oops, did I leak out a definite date night place in McLeod?
Blossoms Village Resort
by
Japleen Kaur
Blossoms is a nature resort situated in the foothills of Dhauladhars. With stay options ranging from majestic cottages to premium rooms, this resort inches slightly towards the luxe side. The best part though is the rooftop lounge. Here you get the best view of the Himalayas, totally uninterrupted. Sit here with a chilled glass of beer and stare away at the splendid beauty around you. They do ample Himachali dishes well but my favourite has to be the Andhra chicken (extremely spicy just how I like it), dal makhani, paneer Tikka, and Malabar parantha. Gosh, I'm hungry now!
1740 Bakery
by
Japleen Kaur
This former pick up only bakery is run by a dynamic woman, Nidhi Thakur - a Bombay girl who is now baking up a storm in Dharamshala. It’s now a full-fledged, must-visit cafe.. Red velvet cakes, chocochip cookies, sourdough breads, hot cross buns, and much more is on the menu. Winter is the time to head to the mountains, and get yourself a slice of heaven from 1740 bakery. Oh, and if you're friends with Nidhi she'll treat you to the best coffee to have ever been made. Follow the bakery on Instagram for updates and to order as they prep in advance.
Rain's Kitchen
by
Japleen Kaur
Rain's Kitchen is a bistro set in upper Dharamkot, away from the tourists. Home to Nidhi Iyer, Ishan Byotra, and Sky, they welcome you with delicious food and hot cups of brewed coffee. From their small kitchen in the mountains they whip up a storm. Nidhi bakes sinful garlic knots, doughnuts, jalapeno rolls etc. Almost every week we see something new on the menu courtesy of her delightful experiments. While Ishan's dal makhani burger and coffee making skills are quite renowned in the region. This Bistro is the place where conversations reside, and hope magnifies.
Cliffy's Cafe
by
Japleen Kaur
This stone cafe hidden amidst the jungle yet right off the road, is the one that Enid Blyton would write about. Cliffy's in Palampur is your ideal date night place though lunch would definitely be a better idea. Specialising in South Indian delicacies, sipping on filter coffee in this surrounding would be a spectacular experience altogether. Don't miss out on trying the Chicken Keema dosa if you're a meat lover.
Trimurti Garden Cafe
by
Urbanaut
Located in lower Dharamkot, this serene and comforting space has a lot to offer. Run by a family, this is the place to go when you need a home away from home. Complete with a beautiful garden and temple, the surroundings are pleasant, the food delicious and the baked desserts divine.

Gallu Village
by
Japleen Kaur
Gallu village is situated 2-3 kms above the hippie village of Dharamkot. It acts as the base camp of the famous Triund hike. But it's not limited to just that identification. It's a place where nature bows down in gratitude, and the winds dance to newer tunes. There's a small temple called the Gallu Devi Temple that the locals visit, and you can too for much needed blessings. There are a couple of chai shops where you can sip on milk tea and admire the valley below. A short walk down those shops is the Gallu waterfall that when not crowded is a picturesque site. Please ensure you have good grip shoes on when you're here! There are a few guest houses here but it is also home to a wonderful property called Eagle's Nest that is quite luxurious in the middle of nowhere.

by
Urbanaut
Rustic living at the edge of a stream, with a stunning view of the snow-clad Dhauladhar mountains. This homestay is comprised of two earth houses with a total of 6 rooms. This is not your luxury resort stay, so expect the basics in these houses which are made entirely of clay, mud and bamboo. The rooms are elegant and airy, and provide a lovely view of the surroundings. Home-cooked food and some much needed calm and solace can be found here. Rajgundha Valley
by
Japleen Kaur
Rajgundha valley is perched high above the town of Bir. To reach the valley you need to embark on a trek from Billing, which is also the take off site for paragliding. A 14km trek that even beginners will enjoy, it'll take around 5-6 hours to reach the village at top. You can also choose to go via Barot valley through Bada Grahn village, which is shorter, scenic, but a lot steeper as it runs along the Uhl river. You can pack some light snacks for the way, and it's advisable to get a guide along as you may lose your way. Once you reach the valley there are guest house stay options, a hostel by Zostel or you can even camp under the stars if it's not too cold. Trekking guide options are easily available in Bir that cost anywhere around 1500-2500 INR per person depending on whether you choose to camp or not. Uncia Trails is a provider that conducts regular guided treks and may be considered as well.
Nurpur Fort
by
Japleen Kaur
Nurpur Fort got its name when the famous Mughal queen, Nur Jahan visited it. Years after that the local king then renovated it to turn the main court area into a temple that is the centre attraction for visitors now. As it is with many historical sites that aren't touristic, this fort is slowly fading away but still has plenty of hope for discovery. From animal paintings on the walls that show the village life to a well that sits in the courtyard to intricate artwork on the arches that make for a brilliant sight. History lovers, this fort is the destination for you.
Kotla Fort
by
Japleen Kaur
One of the many forts in Himachal, this one is situated in the town of Kotla, on the Dharamshala - Pathankot road. A short soothing hike through pine trees will take you to the fort. There is a Baglamukhi maa temple right at the entrance that's believed to have been built by the Pandavas. But there is also another tiny temple inside dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Religious reasons aside, the fort offers beautiful valley views and ample points that make the perfect backdrop to photos. The arches invoke joy in architecture enthusiasts while there are also remnants of paintings on the walls. All in all, a quick trip here with family would be fruitful.
Kareri lake
by
Japleen Kaur
Kareri lake trek is slowly becoming popular with the travel community but is still quite unexplored. The entire trail is lined with pine trees and traverses along a gushing river, adding the ideal background music to your steps. It takes about 12 hours in all to reach the lake but it would be best for you to take a halt at Reoti village which is 6-7 hours away from Kareri village which is the base camp. Stay the night at the guest houses there or camp away, and trek the remaining 2-3 hours early next morning to spend some good time at the location. Here you can witness the mighty Dhauladhars, Indrahar pass, and Mun peak in all their glory! The lake freezes during the months of November to March, so ensure you don't take the risk of venturing out then.
Winch Camp
by
Japleen Kaur
Quite unexplored, Winch Camp is the highest altitude spot in Joginder Nagar which borders Kangra district. There are two ways to reach this spot -- i.e. via Joginder Nagar itself which is the easier route or via Barot valley through Khooni Ghaati. Now, doesn't the latter induce some goosebumps? There are some interesting tales about the place that locals readily share if they have listeners. So ensure you take out some time for that. It'll take you 3-4 hours to trek to Winch Camp, which is the name of the railway station there. But what's special about that is that the railway tracks (now out of service) are laid down at almost 90 degrees. These tracks were used to bring goods up and down during the years of the British rule, and the entire line comes under Punjab Government and not Himachal. Sunrises and sunsets are equally breathtaking from this spot. It's advisable to get a guide for assistance from Barot valley.
Bathu ki Ladi
by
Japleen Kaur
If the combination of mythical stories, historical temple, and migratory birds sounds interesting to you then this the place you were looking for. Bathu Ki Ladi are a cluster of temples near Pong Dam in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. What's so unique about these temples you ask? They are under water for at least 8 months in a year, and can only be visited from March to June. Now, that we have your attention, let's probe further. Made out of the Bathu stone, these temples spend most of their time under water as the levels increase around the Dam. But it's a sight to behold as many varieties of migratory birds make this their home during summer season as well. You can reach the temple by hiring a boat from the shore. The temple has some connection with the Mahabharata that the locals will be more than keen to share with you.
Tashi Jong Khampagar Monastery
by
Japleen Kaur
Palampur has some tourist gems that ensures you take a day trip out there from Bir during your holiday, at least once. Tashi Jong Monastery is one of the largest spiritual centers in the area but is also a community space for Tibetan refugees. Lined with flowers as its boundaries, the colourful building invites you in to take a walk. Peace envelopes you almost immediately as you admire the artistic walls depicting Tibetan culture. It houses multiple temples, the stupa of Khamtrul Rinponche a noted Buddhist monk. In the premises, you'll also find a cafe to eat while you explore, a library for a quick historical read, and a craft emporium where you can purchase authentic Tibetan souvenirs. Or you can just laze around in the gardens outside and stare at the magnificent view of the mountains behind!
Mata Maheshwari Temple
by
Japleen Kaur
Perched on top of a hill opposite to the town of Bir, this temple boasts of a view that showcases the stunning Kangra Valley in all its glory. A quick 20 minutes drive till the base and then an easy hike through the jungle will take you straight till the top. The path is well built and in about 30-45 minutes you can reach the location. Because the Shiv temple offers a 360 degree view, you can visit it both for sunrise and sunset. On a clear day you can see as far as Mandi from here. In winters you can see the Dhauladhar range adding the ideal backdrop to your photos taken here.
